Mert's Original Turkish Tomato Twist with Homemade Croutons

Turkish Twist 9 April 2023

What an exciting week it's been here at S!TII. In addition to having a guest review from our west coast correspondent Syd Feldman (featuring our first foray into Ramen), we're also featuring our first ever review of a homemade, in-house soup, prepared by S!TII's own Mert Erdemir: Mert's Original Turkish Tomato Twist. This exquisite tomato-based soup is the perfect addition to a breezy Sunday afternoon, and the antithesis to Syd's diarrhea-inducing explosive Ramen. The only spice in Mert's Original Turkish Tomato Twist is salt, making it safe for even the most sensitive of palettes. Will this soup punch you in the face with flavor? No. But sometimes you're not looking to get punched in the face by soup. Sometimes you just want a nice soup that can bring people, and even nations, together. At this point you may be asking yourself: "What about this is Turkish? It's just tomato soup. And what's the Twist?" These are excellent questions, and the answer to the first one is that the only thing about this soup that is Turkish is the person who made it: it really is just tomato soup. But it's a dang fine tomato soup, and even comes with homemade sourdough croutons for a bit of added texture. Unfortunately Mert's Original Turkish Twist is not for sale, but is readily available to anyone who stops by the S!TII headquarters in Atlanta. And if you do stop by to grab a bowl, you may just be treated to the answer to the second part of your question. The Twist? It's friendship. As they say in Turkish: "İnsanoğlu kavun değil ki koklayıp da alasın", i.e., "Friends are not a melon that you can smell before buying". Verdict: 8/10
